During France’s Algerian‑war era, a terminally‑ill mother and an over‑worked father place Messaoud and his brother Abdel in foster care. Abdel is sent to a farm, while Messaoud is adopted by a childless woman who hides his Arab background from her staunch Gaullist ex‑army husband. Renamed Michel (Michou) and dyed blond, the boy wins both foster‑parents’ affection and helps mend their strained marriage.
