Scientist Nathan warns that his boss’s publicity stunt—detonating an asteroid—has backfired, splitting the rock and sending a fragment the size of Iceland toward Earth. Although the fragment is deflected, its close pass nudges the planet’s orbit nearer the Sun, causing rapid, extreme heating. Nathan alerts his sister Carly, a TV journalist, who brings her partner, detective Tom. Tom leads a dangerous trek to an Arctic weather station, escorting his volatile daughter Kim, her ex‑convict lover C.J., and Kim’s mother Bonnie, as worldwide fires, water shortages, and looting erupt.
