What Happens in Mehbooba: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Mehbooba (1976) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Suraj, Rajesh Khanna is a rising singer who is presented with a tanpura by his fiancée's father, and soon afterward begins to hear a haunting song that lingers in the night. One stormy evening, while heading to a stage show, he seeks shelter in a small, unknown motel. There, he meets a woman named Ratna, Hema Malini, whose voice seems to echo the very tune that haunts him. That night, he glimpses Ratna singing the same melody and walking toward a dilapidated palace. Trusting a pull he cannot quite explain, Suraj follows her into the haveli and calls out her name. An old keeper of the palace explains that Ratna died more than 1000 years ago and that locals believe her spirit still haunts the place.

As Suraj wanders the shadowed halls, a portrait of Ratna triggers memories of a past life in which he was Prakash, the chief singer of a royal court, and Ratna was the court dancer he loved. They cannot marry: Prakash is betrothed to another, and Ratna is destined to become the royal courtesan. The lovers decide to elope, but they are killed on their way, and they part with a vow to meet again.

Returning to the present, Suraj is pulled deeper into the mystery when he encounters a gypsy girl, Jhumri, Hema Malini, whom he believes is Ratna’s reincarnation. His newfound connection helps Jhumri recall memories of her past life and her deep love for Prakash. The two declare an enduring love that seems to defy time itself. This revelation infuriates Suraj’s fiancée, Rita Malhotra, Asha Sachdev, and Popatlal, a schemer and rival played by Prem Chopra(/actor/prem-chopra), who is eager to pursue Jhumri. Popatlal steals Ratna’s portrait and fans the flames of conflict, turning the gypsies against Suraj and sparking a tense showdown between the singer and the nomadic troupe.

Amid growing danger and mounting opposition, Suraj and Jhumri navigate a web of jealous rivals, eerie memories, and the blurred lines between past and present. The climax centers on whether their love can endure the weight of history and present-day threats, as they confront the obstacles arrayed against them and seek to consummate their bond once more. Through courage, persistence, and a touch of the supernatural, the pair strive to forge a future that honors their centuries-old vow.

The questions people ask most about Mehbooba (1976): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Suraj hear the haunting song at night?

Suraj begins hearing the haunting song after receiving a tanpura from his fiancée's father. The melody is the same one that Ratna (the court dancer in his past life as Prakash) used to sing. This supernatural connection suggests the tanpura itself is a vessel for the unresolved love story from a thousand years ago, pulling Suraj back to his past life memories.

Foreshadowing: The tanpura, given to him at the beginning, is the key object that awakens his past-life memories.

Q2

Why couldn't Prakash and Ratna get married in their past life?

Prakash was already betrothed to another woman named Jamuna, as was customary for the chief singer of the royal court. Additionally, Ratna was destined to become the royal courtesan, a position that required her to remain unmarried to the court. Their social stations made marriage impossible, forcing them to elope.

Suraj's presence and his conviction that Jhumri is Ratna's reincarnation trigger her memories. As they spend time together, the connection between them awakens latent memories of her past life as the court dancer who loved Prakash. She suddenly recalls their love story and their tragic death while eloping.

Foreshadowing: The portrait of Ratna that Suraj discovers earlier foreshadows the revelation that Jhumri carries Ratna's soul.

Q6

Why does Ratna's spirit haunt the dilapidated palace?
