Bill Anderson, portrayed by Aaron Eckhart, is a middle-aged man languishing in a state of quiet desperation. Each day at his father-in-law’s bank, he feels the weight of his lack of authority bearing down on him. His struggles with self-esteem manifest through a secret obsession with candy, which he consumes in solitude at home and in the office. Meanwhile, the esteemed Mr. Jacoby, a prominent figure in the community, contemplates a run for mayor. Bill and his wife, Jess, who is Jacoby’s daughter, live comfortably in a house provided by her father, thus ensuring their financial security thanks to Jacoby’s influence.
In a bid to escape these financial constraints, Bill is on the brink of buying a doughnut franchise from the Whitmans. However, during a family public donation ceremony, his life intersects with that of a rebellious teenager, known as “the Kid.” After protecting the Kid from a stern school principal who discovers marijuana, Bill agrees to join a school mentoring program suggested by the principal, setting off a chain of events that will challenge his life.
As Bill grapples with jealousy over Jess’s friendship with newscaster Chip Johnson, paranoia takes hold. He resorts to installing a hidden camera in their bedroom, leading to a shocking discovery: Jess is indeed having an affair with Chip. Consumed by rage, Bill crashes Chip’s live broadcast, leading to his arrest for an impulsive attack.
Bailed out by his successful older brother, Sargeant, Bill finds solace at Sargeant’s home with his husband, Paul. The atmosphere becomes increasingly tense as he and Jess argue about the damning footage of her betrayal. When confronted, Chip’s disrespect towards Jess pushes Bill to lose his temper once more, resulting in him being called “Chip’s deranged fan” during a live broadcast, forever branding him with a shameful reminder as bystanders yell at him to “Apologize!”
As Bill rekindles his passion for swimming and continues his mentorship of the Kid, who admires him greatly, he devises a plan to win back Jess’s affections. With the Kid’s encouragement, the flirtatious lingerie salesgirl Lucy begins to bait Bill in front of Jess, attempting to invoke jealousy. Their antics reach new heights when Lucy tags along with Bill and the Kid on a visit to a doughnut franchise location, pretending to be Jess.
In his arduous journey of personal reclamation, Bill begins to shed his previous dependencies. He refrains from indulging in sweets, loses weight through diligent swimming routines, and continues to mentor the Kid while striving to rekindle the love between him and Jess. During a family gathering meant to support Jacoby’s mayoral campaign, Bill takes it upon himself to procure fireworks, a decision that becomes pivotal in a series of chaotic events that test his resilience.
A seemingly cheer-filled day at a golf course picnic spirals downhill upon encountering Jess and Chip, leading to Bill’s ejection by security. In a moment of distress, he crashes his car into a tree, causing the fireworks to detonate prematurely. Despite the chaos, the Kid heroically rushes to Bill’s aid, driving him to the hospital.
When Jess arrives, she learns of Bill’s deep unhappiness, anchored in their dependency on her father’s wealth, prompting him to express a desire to sever those ties. Determined to redefine himself, he undergoes a dramatic transformation—shearing off his hair and overhauling his wardrobe, signaling a fresh beginning. This metamorphosis culminates in Bill’s tender resignation at the bank, as he acknowledges his true self.
To Bill’s surprise, Jess announces that she’s secured permission from the Whitmans to proceed with the franchise purchase—a twist that leaves him confused. In a heartfelt conversation, he admits he was contemplating calling off their plans, having discovered newfound clarity. By surrendering control, Bill allows Jess to take charge, leading them to amicably resolve their issues.
As Bill readies to bid farewell to the Kid at school, excitement brews for the fresh chapter awaiting him. With a promise to stay connected, he gifts the Kid an explosive token of friendship from his locker—fireworks symbolizing joy and newfound freedom.
