After a fierce argument drives his wife out, Max tries to manage the household alone. He buys a chicken that stubbornly stays alive, chases it with a revolver, partially plucks, shaves and half‑roasts it before it finally escapes. Then he attempts to black his boots, spills the liquid, and ends up using the same spoon to stir his soup. He writes a pleading note for his wife's return, only to learn he has inherited a large fortune and revels in sudden wealth—until his wife comes back.
