Jean Epstein adapts George Sand’s novel Mauprat. Orphan Bernard de Mauprat is taken in by the brigand Tristan, who raises him alongside his own sons in a life of hatred, murder and pillage. Tristan’s brother Hubert and his daughter Edmée try to pull Bernard from the outlaw life, while Bernard fights to win Edmée’s love despite her betrothal.
