Set in the Nazi regime, actors Elisabeth Maurer and Hans Wieland thrive in Berlin. Elisabeth, a Jewish actress, ignores warnings to flee and marries Hans, who promises protection. As his career flourishes, she is barred from work. After Kristallnacht in 1938, she decides to leave, but Hans urges her to stay, believing he can keep her safe.
