On graduation night, Bo corners Bridger in a restroom and, after Bridger finally defends himself, Bo's two accomplices hold him down and beat him, including to his chest which triggers a cardiac arrest. The wood-shop teacher is tipped off, and an ambulance is summoned.

Bridger is taken to the hospital in a coma while Clover reads poetry at his side. He awakens, completes a line of a poem, and asks Clover to marry him. Bo is arrested as the altercation becomes a legal matter.

Bridger and Clover marry in a private ceremony, choosing to commit to each other in the face of hardship. They also plan to fulfill Bridger's dream of seeing the Pacific Ocean by traveling to California.

The couple reaches the Pacific coast, and Bridger's dream comes to life as they stand on the shoreline. They share a moment of hope before the next challenge of their lives begins.

The morning after their wedding, Bridger's heart fails and Clover finds him on the beach. Their joy turns to heartbreak as Bridger dies, leaving Clover to face a future without him.

In the final scene, Clover is shown happily pushing their child on a swing, suggesting that life continues and memory endures after their loss.
