Feri Noszty forges bills of exchange, a grave offense in his community. To protect his honor and repay the debt, his family sacrifices their only wealth by arranging a marriage between his sister Vilma and a rich suitor. Yet Feri must abandon his officer rank, take a magistrate post that barely meets his needs, leaving only a strategic marriage and a hefty dowry as his last hope.
