Orphaned after her mother’s death, Annie is sent to an orphanage where she soothes children with goblin tales; her abusive uncle Thomp forces her to toil on his farm. Neighbor Dave rescues her and becomes her protector. She lives with Squire Goode’s family, telling stories, but war breaks her when Dave is killed; she falls ill and dies surrounded by her family.
