After the war, Red Army soldier Paul Runge returns to his native Koordi and finds that, despite the new Soviet regime, the village is still an abandoned, uncultured Estonian hamlet ruled by wealthy landlords who oppress the residents. Determined to change things, Runge begins urging the creation of a kolkhoz to reorganize agricultural life.
