In December 1980, John Lennon and Yoko Ono ended a five-year media silence to promote a new album. Lennon participated in a candid interview with BBC Radio One DJ Andy Peebles in New York, where he openly discussed topics previously unaddressed. These included the breakup of The Beatles, his complex relationship with Paul McCartney, struggles with addiction, and political issues in both the US and UK. He also spoke about his family and feelings of homesickness for Liverpool. The interview becomes particularly poignant as Lennon was tragically shot and killed just 48 hours later at the age of 40.
