Based on a story by Kikuchi Kan, the first part follows wealthy young woman Toyomi (Takako Irie) and her lover Shintaro (Minoru Takada). When Shintaro’s father arranges his marriage to Yurie, the couple flee to Tokyo. Shintaro returns demanding marriage to Toyomi, but his father forces him to attend the arranged‑marriage meeting with Yurie. While Shintaro is away, Toyomi takes a vacation with her close friend Michiko (Yumeko Aizome). At a class reunion Toyomi, distressed by Shintaro’s silence, stays home, while Michiko runs into Shintaro and Yurie and pulls him aside to demand an explanation.
