La traviata, meaning “The Fallen Woman,” is a three‑act Italian opera by Giuseppe Verdi with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. Adapted from Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel La dame aux Camélias, it premiered on 6 March 1853 at Venice’s La Fenice. Originally titled Violetta, Verdi and Piave wanted a contemporary setting, but the house demanded a period backdrop; realistic productions only emerged in the 1880s.
