Set in post‑war Italy, naive Gelsomina is bought from her poor mother by the brutish circus strongman Zampanò, who makes her his wife and performance partner. She endures his coldness and abuse as they roam the countryside. When the carefree clown Il Matto befriends her, Zampanò’s jealousy surfaces and Gelsomina begins to consider leaving.
