Using 1950s footage and commentary, the film asks why life is marked by discontent, anguish and fear. It is split into two parts. Pier Paolo Pasolini denounces Western colonialism, celebrates African independence, and calls Marxism salvation. Giovanni Guareschi defends Western civilization and offers a hopeful, Christian‑based outlook for humanity.
