Lady in the Fog

In London, Heather McMara asks American writer Philip O'Dell to help identify who killed her brother Danny, who was run over in a foggy night. With no evidence and police inaction, O'Dell agrees to investigate and accompanies her.

At Peggy's nightclub, where Danny used to go, O'Dell and McMara learn Danny's last address. They sense that someone connected to the club may have vital information about his death.

Danny's hotel room has been ransacked, and a man hiding inside knocks O'Dell out. He recovers a tape recording that becomes a key clue in the case.

Among Danny's correspondence is a letter leading to actress Marilyn Durant, who is despondent over a break-up with Danny. Durant mentions producer Christopher Hampden, who arranged a screen test for her, hinting at a possible lead.

A speeding car tries to run O'Dell down, and his quarters are later ransacked. Realizing someone is onto him, he cancels his plan to leave London and continues the investigation.

In a moment of personal candor, O'Dell confesses romantic feelings for Heather McMara. The admission deepens their bond and complicates the stakes of the investigation.

O'Dell listens to the tape recounting a forced garage fire in Gladstone that killed a man named George Maybrick. He accidentally erases part of the recording while trying to replay it but retains enough detail to pursue the lead.

O'Dell learns the murdered man was George Maybrick, and that his partners Christopher Hampden and Martin Sorrowby relocated to London with Mrs. Margaret Maybrick.

Hampden stonewalls O'Dell and mentions that Sorrowby cracked up during the war and is in a mental hospital. O'Dell senses a deeper conspiracy connected to Maybrick's murder.

O'Dell sneaks into the hospital and encounters Sorrowby, who admits that Margaret Maybrick manipulated him and Hampden into the murder, but claims he is insane. Sorrowby slips out of the hospital, but is run down and killed by Hampden's henchman Connors.

Peggy visits McMara, wrapping herself in a distinctive scarf last seen on Danny's killer, and guides her toward Hampden's. McMara learns that Peggy is actually Margaret Maybrick, Hampden's wife.

O'Dell arrives to rescue McMara as Connors and Hampden are killed during a confrontation. Margaret Maybrick is apparently killed in a car accident as she flees the scene.

With the danger over, O'Dell and McMara depart London for the United States. They decide to leave together, bringing an end to the case.
