Spanish filmmaker Víctor Erice recounts the very first film he ever saw—Roy William Neill’s 1944 Sherlock Holmes adventure The Scarlet Claw, starring Basil Rathbone. He describes how that early cinematic impression transports him back to the bleak aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, exposing the anxieties that haunted children and prompting a meditation on how memory preserves and distorts such traumatic experiences.
