In the late 1960s‑1970s cyclists in Marin County, Northern California, modified pre‑WWII bikes to race down Mount Tamalpais. Elite road racers and free‑spirited hippies built rugged “Klunkerz” from junkyard parts, risking life and limb. Their grassroots experiment birthed the multi‑billion‑dollar mountain‑bike industry and an Olympic sport.
