Azzam, portrayed by Kholidi Asadil Alam, is a student from Indonesia studying at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. He finds himself in an unexpected situation when Eliana, played by Alice Norin, requests him to cater an event hosted by her father, the Indonesian ambassador. The next day, she surprises him with a proposition—a French kiss as a form of thanks for his help. However, Azzam declines her offer. Instead, the embassy driver, Ali, portrayed by Didi Petet, encourages Azzam to consider Anna, a master's student played by Oki Setiana Dewi, as a more suitable romantic partner.
Despite Ali's insistence, Azzam hesitates as he questions their compatibility, particularly since he makes a living selling food and Anna comes from a notable family, being the daughter of a respected kyai (Islamic scholar). When Azzam decides to pursue Anna, he discovers that she is already engaged to his friend Furqon, played by Andi Arsyil Rahman. Azzam's concerns grow as Ustadz Mujab, represented by Habiburrahman El Shirazy, advises him against the complications that their different statuses might cause in a relationship.
The lives of the Indonesian students take a turn as they face numerous challenges. Azzam's apartment is raided by the police while searching for a criminal named Wail, leaving him and his roommate, Fadhil, portrayed by Lucky Perdana, shaken. Fadhil faints from the stress of the encounter. Meanwhile, Furqon is under pressure while defending his thesis, receiving an email from an extortionist threatening to leak compromising photos if he does not comply with their demands. As Azzam tries to lend a helping hand, he also assists Anna and her friend after they accidentally leave their belongings on a bus, even hiring a taxi to retrieve their bags. During their time together, Azzam and Anna develop mutual fondness, although complications arise due to her not introducing herself.
Azzam finally encounters Anna at a seminar she is moderating, but fate complicates things further—she is set to fly to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for research soon after. Meanwhile, Eliana persists in trying to win Azzam's affection, even inviting him to cater for her birthday party.
In a twist of fate, Furqon learns that his blackmailer, previously an Israeli serial extorter, has been arrested. However, he discovers that most victims contract AIDS from her; upon testing, he finds himself HIV positive. In an attempt to maintain confidentiality, he returns to Indonesia. Coincidentally, Anna also returns to her home country, where she makes friends with Azzam's sister during a speaking tour in Surakarta, Central Java. Despite accepting Furqon’s proposal on the condition that he refrains from taking a second wife, Furqon's conscience weighs heavily on him due to his health status.
Azzam and Eliana also find themselves on the same flight back to Indonesia. Upon arrival, they are confronted by reporters eager for information about Eliana's upcoming soap opera. In a moment of mixed emotions, Eliana tries to present Azzam as her boyfriend, but he quickly dismisses this, referring to himself as merely her tempeh seller while waving to his sister. This turbulent journey of friendships, love, and personal struggles among the Indonesian students in Cairo marks a unique and complex tale of contemporary challenges.
