Set in the French countryside of the 1600s, a rider abandons a newborn on a monastery’s steps after biting off his own nose. The child is raised by an ex‑pirate and his wife, who teach him to read, write, count, joust and fence, and give him a wooden nose. Summoned by a local baron to a seminary, he rebels and makes a daring, action‑filled escape.
