When Gérard discovers a dead raccoon in his yard, he becomes deeply troubled, confronting thoughts of his own mortality. His wife, Jocelyne, witnesses his growing despair and obsession with the animal, and his anguish begins to affect her as well. After a night of torment, they decide to bury the raccoon on the land where their former house stood in Joutel, a deserted mining town. There, amidst the encroaching boreal forest and the ruins of their past, they encounter a mystical figure who helps them confront their inner struggles and find peace.
