Stan and Ollie travel across the U.S. as The Original Zoot Suit Band. They meet Chester Wright, who claims a pill can turn water into fuel. In truth, Chester is a swindler who substitutes water canisters with gasoline, slipping it past the duo.

They devise a scheme to use Stan and Ollie's performances to attract a crowd, creating demand for Chester's fraudulent product. The plan hinges on convincing fans that the pill can fuel vehicles, letting Chester peddle the hoax.

The ruse yields initial success as crowds gather and excitement grows. However, the scheme collapses when a customer suffers a disastrous accident due to the pill's ineffectiveness.

To avoid retaliation, Chester masquerades as a police officer and pretends to arrest Stan and Ollie. The fake arrest buys time for Chester to escape scrutiny and continue the con in a different guise.

Susan, a choir singer who knows the trio, asks them to help recover her mother's swindled funds. The request launches a new mission that tests their loyalty and improvisational skills.

Adopting aliases, they infiltrate a hotel where the con men behind the scam are staying. The stealthy entry sets up a confrontation that will hinge on their ability to outwit the criminals.

Ollie stage-manages an ostentatious display of wealth to lure Corcoran, the gang's leader. Stan and Ollie hope that drawing him in will give them the leverage needed to reclaim the stolen funds.

Disguised as a woman, Stan unintentionally complicates the plans while Ollie pushes toward a confrontation with Corcoran. The confrontation is designed to coerce the gang leader into returning the money.

They hatch a new scheme that uses Susan's employment at Bennett's club to retrieve the remaining funds. The plan relies on misdirection and double-dealing to keep the gang from recognizing their true motive.

Despite making progress, the deception is uncovered and the trio is captured by the gang. They still manage to secure Bennett's funds before being hauled away on the gang's vessel.

Trapped aboard Bennett's vessel, they stage a daring escape. Their bold move leads to the authorities catching up with the gang and bringing them to justice.

Chester proves his true intentions by returning the money to Susan's mother. He redeems himself through this act, showing that his motives were not purely criminal after all.

Stan and Ollie bid farewell to Susan and Chester and make a hasty departure to evade any lingering gangsters. The ending leaves them on the road again, moving to safer ground.
