The scene shifts to a rugged individual navigating the toxic terrain in an ATV, their face obscured by an oxygen mask. This woman, Margaret Qualley, meticulously collects samples from stagnant waters while documenting her findings. She then ascends above the clouds to an abandoned laboratory equipped with a large telescope.

In Act II, we delve into Sam’s daily existence, revealed through a heartfelt email she sends to Elon, who is stationed near Io and is clearly her love interest. He inquires about her father and encourages her to join him on an Exodus ship to escape the dying Earth. Sam tends to her vegetable garden, aware that the plants may not thrive in the altered atmosphere, and ventures into the Zone to gather samples. In her quiet moments, she immerses herself in a mythology book salvaged from a deserted library, and diligently maintains her wind turbines and solar panels. Each day, she listens to a recording of her father’s voice, meant for a radio broadcast, while grappling with a recurring dream of standing on a beach, breathing freely.

The plot thickens when a violent thunderstorm approaches during one of her expeditions to the Zone. Hurrying back, she discovers her lab damaged, with her testing equipment in disarray, although the greenhouse remains relatively unscathed. An email from Elon informs Sam that the Command is preparing for a mission to transport humans to another star, ten light years away, and shockingly, the last Exodus flight is set to leave in four days.

A pivotal moment occurs when a mysterious man crashes into Sam’s world. Stepping out of a balloon capsule, Anthony Mackie introduces himself as Micah and inquires about her father. Sam, caught off guard, attempts to maintain the facade that her father is on a mission. However, she eventually reveals the painful truth—her father has passed away.

The narrative reaches a climactic peak when Sam receives yet another email from Elon. She begins with her tragic news, eliciting his condolences and unveiling an earth-shattering decision: Elon has been invited to join the mission to the stars and has resolved to go. Despite the distance separating them, he believes their love can endure across the universe. Sam is crushed by this revelation, spiraling into erratic behavior that even leads her to seduce Micah.

Micah, determined to help her, plans to take Sam along with him. They chart a course for the balloon’s journey to connect with the Exodus mission. Unfortunately, a location change jeopardizes their helium supply. But Sam, brimming with knowledge, knows where to find more in the Zone. With helium secured, they endeavor to launch the balloon from a nearby city park. However, Sam feels an overwhelming need to visit a final art exhibit, alluded to earlier, in a museum before their departure. Aware of the ticking clock, Micah reminds her they have limited time.

Act III unfolds as Sam roams the museum, entirely absorbed by the artwork. Yet, when she surpasses the hour, Micah anxiously searches for her. He discovers Sam captivated by a painting depicting Leda and the Swan and engages her in a discussion about its deeper meaning while she grapples with understanding. This classic Greek myth resonates with her, instilling a sense of hope for the future of Earth. Sam, burdened by her childhood dreams of a dark new world, reveals her audacious desire to experience the new atmosphere by removing her oxygen mask. In an unexpected moment, Micah catches her as she inhales, with his own mask still intact.

The epilogue showcases Sam’s transformation; her conditioning allowing her to breathe in this ‘new’ atmosphere. Proclaiming her determination, she reveals she won’t abandon Earth, believing it can be saved. The final scene depicts Sam standing on a misty beach, alongside Micah’s child. As she sends a heartfelt email to Micah, she encourages him to bring others back to Earth, reflecting on her father’s wisdom and invoking the sentiment of how we ultimately return to our beginnings—where everything feels new once again.
