A construction manager near bankruptcy clashes with his daughter Cheryl as her husband Alex drifts into crime. At a chaotic 'party', Grace is asleep in the car and witnesses her mother being arrested. Ray rushes to the police station to learn of Grace's arrest, then aborts his daughter there and heads to the protest site, where locals oppose his highway project. The combination of Grace's arrest and the environmental protest triggers Ray's nervous breakdown.

Five years pass with Ray unemployed and struggling; Cheryl remains imprisoned for possession though innocent; Grace lives in a children's home under nurse supervision; Alex has fled and not appeared. The family dynamics have deteriorated while guilt and distance accumulate, setting the stage for new bonds and old regrets.

Cheryl's lawyer visits and hints that Alex might kidnap Grace in exchange for money, implying Cheryl still has leverage. Cheryl grows fearful for Grace's safety, realizing Grace could be used as a bargaining chip. The lawyer accepts a bribe, revealing a corrupt undercurrent.

Ray and Grace drive north toward Ashland, Oregon to lie low until Cheryl's parole. They spend a night in a hotel, and the growing trust between grandfather and granddaughter gains depth in the close, cramped space.

Grace awakens an elderly man with her powers in the hotel, bringing his consciousness to life. He accuses her of desecration, calling it the work of the devil, and Ray and Grace hastily leave the hotel with this unsettling event behind them.

In a park, Grace befriends Nicholas, another indigo child. Nicholas' mother explains the nature of indigo children to Ray, providing context for Grace's abilities and the strange, otherworldly experiences they've shared.

Further north, Grace and Ray's car fails and they must continue on foot. They are befriended by teenagers heading to Mt. Ashland and spend the night in a cabin, beginning to form a new, makeshift community.

In the cabin, Ray's estranged son Stewart arrives to collect supposed money Cheryl hid and takes Grace hostage. Ray opens his suitcase to reveal a pistol instead of medicine, a moment that jolts him to reconsider his course toward violence.

Grace summons help and police arrive, exposing Officer Whitfield as one of the officers who captured Cheryl and showing that he has been corruptly profiting from Stewart's pursuit. The confrontation centers on justice for the family and the truth behind the money.

The film closes with the reconciliation and reunion of Ray, Grace, and Cheryl as they begin to rebuild their fractured family. The Indigo child's powers have brought them closer together and redefined their future.
