Ray Talloway, a construction manager whose business teeters on bankruptcy, finds his life spiraling as his family fractures around him. His semi-estranged daughter Cheryl clashes with him at every turn, while her husband Alex, Gregory Linington, is part of a small circle of petty criminals. They share one daughter, Grace, a remarkable child whose gifts are described as indigo, and whose presence soon becomes the thread that may pull the family back together.

One night, Alex takes Cheryl to a so‑called “party” that promises something thrilling for the participants, likely fueled by drugs. Cheryl worries about leaving Grace alone in the car, so Alex departs to check on her. A few minutes later, a police detachment arrests all the criminals. Grace, asleep in the car, wakes to see her mother led away in handcuffs. Ray, home and unaware of the immediate crisis, receives a call from the police and heads to the station, where a tense conversation with a business partner about environmental protests at one of Ray’s projects interrupts him. The news hits him hard: in a single moment, he abandons his daughter at the station to race to the protest site. The sight of the crowd opposing Ray’s plans to clear a forest for a new highway, combined with the shock of Cheryl’s arrest, triggers a painful nervous breakdown.

Five years pass. Ray has lost his job and lives in a battered old car, while Cheryl sits in prison, innocent of the drugs she’s accused of possessing and without Ray’s help or bail. Alex has vanished, perhaps north to Canada, and he has not returned. Cheryl’s lawyer visits and hints that Grace could be seized by Alex if money changes hands, a suggestion that unsettles Cheryl and lends urgency to their fragile bond. After the lawyer accepts a bribe, Cheryl, unaware of the corruption, begs Ray to visit and to take Grace home until Cheryl’s release on parole. Driven by a sense of duty and guilt over his failings as father and grandfather, Ray agrees.

Grace’s reappearance is a shock: she has grown into a young person with unsettling abilities that unsettle Ray. In a desperate moment, he abducts Grace with her consent and aid, and the two flee to Ray’s girlfriend, Sally, Lynette Louise, who offers temporary shelter. They travel north, hoping to lie low in Ashland, Oregon, until Cheryl’s parole comes through. Their road trip includes a night in a hotel, where Grace astonishingly awakens Ray’s estranged father figure, a man stricken by Alzheimer’s, by guiding him back to wakefulness; the elderly man’s reaction—calling it “the work of the devil”—gives Ray and Grace a renewed sense of purpose as they pull away.

In a park, Grace befriends a lonely boy named Nicholas, another indigo child. His mother explains to Ray the nature of these children, helping him understand Grace’s abilities and needs. They press on, moving farther north, where a car breakdown forces them to travel on foot. A group of teenagers heading to Mt. Ashland takes them in for a night at a cabin, offering the chance to rest and regroup. Among the teenagers is Logan, who shares a childhood memory that unsettles him, and Emma, who initially resists Grace’s powers but eventually comes to accept them.

When Ray and Grace finally reach the cabin area, they discover an unexpected visitor: Ray’s long-estranged son Stewart, [Dane Bowman], who has come to seize what he believes is money Cheryl hid and that Grace knows where it is. Stewart takes Grace hostage, provoking Ray to reveal a medicine he claims is in a suitcase, only to discover a pistol instead. Ray hesitates, his past memories catching up, and he abandons any plan to threaten Stewart. He tries to apologize, but Stewart will not hear him. The tension is interrupted by the arrival of two police officers, who Grace had summoned. In a twist, Grace reveals that the younger officer among them, Officer Whitfield, was one of the officers who had previously arrested Cheryl and has been abusing the money that Stewart sought.

The film closes on a note of reconciliation and reunion, as the fractured family begins to come back together, shaped by Grace’s extraordinary gifts and the hard-won exercise of forgiveness, mercy, and the stubborn hope that a damaged family can still find its way home.
