Jarman called the union of light and matter “an alchemical conjunction” and used superimposed images to create dreamlike symbolism. Initially titled English Apocalypse, the final title comes from a 17th‑century alchemical text where “shadow of the sun” referred to the philosopher’s stone. The work was conceived as an ambient video meant to enrich an environment.
