I Am the End of the World

In Rome, Angelo, a vehicle for hire driver specializing in taking drunk teenagers home, receives a call from his sister Anna in Palermo. She requests him to take care of their elderly parents, Franco and Rita, as she plans to go on vacation. This marks the beginning of Angelo's mission to reconnect with his estranged parents and care for them.

Angelo makes the trip to Palermo to take care of his parents. Despite his initial reluctance, he accepts the responsibility after waiting a month for his car to be repaired, which is necessary for his work. His arrival signals the start of his strained relationship with his parents.

Angelo accompanies Franco and Rita to their psychologist and doctor, but he openly shows hostility and resentment. His behavior reveals underlying anger from past wrongs and reveals his intention to make their lives miserable as revenge.

During his stay, Angelo deprives his father of his favorite foods and wine, and forces his mother, suffering from osteoporosis, to climb stairs instead of using the elevator. These actions demonstrate his hostile attitude towards his parents, despite their health being otherwise good.

Angelo meets Dr. Marta Pedrotta, the substitute family doctor, who shows interest in him, believing he is caring towards his parents. She also learns that Angelo asks about serious health conditions, hinting at his desire for his parents to have health issues.

At the hospital, Marta requests Angelo to take her son Gabriele home. Angelo agrees and takes Gabriele out for forbidden foods and allows him to drive his mother’s car, further revealing his manipulative behavior and disinterest in the well-being of his parents.

Anna and her husband Nando are on vacation on a sailing boat with friends, but Anna becomes frantic because Angelo has tampered with her parents' phones, preventing communication. Her increasing anxiety leads to tensions with her friends and her eventual departure from the boat.

Franco and Rita, eager to reconnect, consider leaving their house in Palermo to Angelo after their deaths, trusting him to inherit it. Angelo shocks them by immediately selling the house, causing distress and heart attacks among his parents.

In September, Angelo leaves Palermo and returns to Rome, while Anna goes back to Palermo and brings her parents to her own house, as Angelo has sold their ancestral home. This close of this phase signifies a break in their physical proximity.

Angelo faces legal trouble as Dr. Pedrotta's ex-husband reports her for trusting her son Gabriele to Angelo, who is accused of endangering Gabriele by letting him drive. The court quickly acquits Angelo, clearing his name amidst ongoing conflicts.

After leaving the courthouse, Angelo meets his sister Anna, who informs him that their parents have been taken to a nursing home. This news prompts Angelo to decide to reunite with his parents and take them away.

Angelo picks up his parents from the nursing home and loads them into his camper, planning to take them to Switzerland. The purpose of the trip is to explore euthanasia, which is legal there, and Angelos’s motivation is driven by their condition and his own conflicting feelings.
