Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns and a satanic Sabbath introduce Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 classic, which stitches vivid vignettes together to suggest that medieval witch hysteria was akin to the delusions diagnosed in early‑20th‑century psychiatry. The film never takes itself seriously, mixing grotesque scares, macabre humor and striking visual tableau.
