Set in 1950, the film follows Father Leopold and the monks of his order as they attempt to revive Christianity in a war-torn nation. Initially, the communist authorities permit their work, even allowing the Church to reclaim religious artifacts hidden during the conflict. However, this fragile peace is shattered when Father Leopold is falsely arrested and subjected to brutal torture. His former student, Lieutenant Keller, now a staunch believer in the socialist system, is tasked by Major Fyodorov to extract a confession, but the Father’s unwavering faith ultimately transforms everything.
