Based on true events, the film follows Lena Baker, an African‑American woman in Georgia who endures severe hardship, makes difficult choices, and ultimately faces the death penalty. In 1945 she became the state’s only woman sentenced to the electric chair; she was executed, then posthumously pardoned in 2005.
