Green Border

In 2021, a Syrian refugee family arrives at an airport in Minsk, Belarus. The family consists of Bashir, Amina, their three children, and Bashir's grandfather, Mohamed, ready for their journey to seek refuge.

The family plans to cross the green border into Poland, travel through Germany, and eventually reach a relative in Sweden. Accompanying them is Leila, an English-speaking refugee from Afghanistan, who offers her support.

Upon reaching the Polish border, the refugee family is forced out of their transport van and has to navigate through the forest on foot. This sudden shift heightens the dangers they face as they try to enter a new country.

The group is eventually discovered by Polish authorities who forcibly return them to Belarus by pushing them through a barbed wire fence. This act illustrates the harsh realities faced by refugees trying to enter Poland.

Jan, a Polish border patrol officer, is ordered to send all migrants back to Belarus under the command of his superiors. His inner turmoil begins as he witnesses the mistreatment of refugees.

A shocking incident occurs when Polish guards throw a pregnant African refugee over a barbed wire fence, injuring her. This brutal act receives media attention and deeply troubles Jan, who struggles with his conscience.

While on patrol, Jan and another guard find the lifeless body of a pregnant refugee. Following orders to ignore such tragedies, they desensitively dispose of her body, leading Jan to have a breakdown.

A group of activists searching for migrants in the woods discovers Bashir's family. They provide essential supplies such as clothing, food, and medical aid, but cannot fully assist due to legal complications.

During a confrontation with Belarusian police, members of the refugee group, including Nur and Leila, manage to escape into the forest. This precarious situation heightens the tension and uncertainty of their journey.

Julia, a therapist living near the border, hears cries for help and discovers Leila and an unconscious Nur in a swamp. In a heartbreaking twist, Nur slips into the mud and drowns, adding to the family's loss.

After the traumatic incident, Leila is taken to a hospital but is soon detained by Polish authorities. The fate of Leila remains uncertain, amplifying the despair of the refugee situation.

Moved by the events, Julia decides to join the activists committed to helping refugees. She rescues a Moroccan refugee who's injured but finds him missing upon returning, leading to her arrest for crossing into the exclusion zone.

In the wake of Nur's death, the Syrian family contacts a human smuggler who hides them in a truck to escape. Upon inspection, Jan recognizes Bashir but chooses to let them go, showcasing his internal conflict.

In the epilogue, the film contrasts the fate of Ukrainian refugees entering Poland easily in 2022 against the treatment that Syrian and other migrants faced previously. This stark change reflects shifting political and humanitarian responses.
