In 1981, Kenny Wells, inspired by his father's legacy, helps run the prospecting company Washoe. After his father's death, he faces bankruptcy and loss, forcing him to move operations from their office to his girlfriend's bar.

Kenny, living with his girlfriend Kay, experiences a vivid dream that propels him to Indonesia. There, he meets geologist Michael Acosta, and together they embark on a risky business venture despite their financial struggles.

After convincing Mike to partner with him, Kenny makes the journey back to America to secure the necessary funding for their mining operation. He manages to raise the money needed to finance their ambitious gold mine project.

Kenny and Mike face severe setbacks as their mine fails to yield any gold. As the situation grows dire, Mike persuades the workers to return with the promise of fresh water, rekindling their hope.

While working on the project, Kenny contracts malaria and spends weeks bedridden. Upon awakening, he is ecstatic to hear from Mike that they have finally struck gold at their mine.

Kenny returns to America and sets up a new office for Washoe. They secure a meeting with a major Wall Street bank, which leads to an investment of $20 million after Mike impresses with a visit to the mine.

With Washoe's stock skyrocketing, Kenny's life transforms into a series of celebrations and parties. However, Kay expresses her concerns about his new lifestyle, fearing he may be taken advantage of.

Kenny is approached by Mark Hancock, a major mining executive, who offers him $300 million for part ownership of the mine. Offended by the stipulation of losing his company's name, Kenny vehemently declines the offer.

The next day, Kenny receives devastating news from Mike: the Indonesian government has closed down their mine. They learn that Hancock has connections with powerful people, including the Indonesian president.

Despite feeling defeated, Kenny and Mike devise a bold plan to win back their mine. With the help of the Indonesian president's son, they manage to reopen the mine and secure a significant stake in a now $30 billion business.

As Kenny receives a prestigious golden pickax award, he considers approaching Kay again. However, witnessing her with another man leads him to rethink his decision, marking a turning point in their relationship.

Kenny faces chaos when he discovers that Mike faked the gold mine using a method called 'salting', effectively deceiving everyone. The community learns of the hoax, and Mike goes missing, reportedly fleeing.
