Godzilla vs. Mothra

In mid-1992, a meteoroid crashes in the Izu–Ogasawara Trench, awakening Godzilla. The event follows the battle with Mecha-King Ghidorah and signals a new threat rising from the depths. This awakening sets the stage for the later human and monstrous conflicts.

Six months after the awakening, explorer Takuya Fujito is detained for stealing an ancient artifact. His detention pulls him into the island's mysteries and ties his fate to the mission to Infant Island. The legal trouble also raises questions about the true purpose of the expedition.

A representative of the Japanese Prime Minister offers to drop Takuya's charges in exchange for joining the Infant Island expedition. He travels with his ex-wife Masako Tezuka and Kenji Ando, the secretary of the Marutomo company, to the island. The deal drags human politics into the unfolding kaiju crisis.

Upon arriving on Infant Island, the trio discovers a cave showing a battle between two giant insects. The cave hints at guardians connected to Mothra and Battra. They also encounter a giant egg, foreshadowing the creatures' emergence.

The Cosmos explain that the egg belongs to Mothra and recount how an ancient civilization tried to control Earth's climate 12,000 years ago. Battra is described as a fierce larval guardian who destroyed the civilization but later became uncontrollable. Mothra is Earth's countermeasure, sent to oppose Battra.

The Marutomo company sends a freighter to Infant Island to retrieve the egg under the guise of protection. As the freighter sails, Godzilla surfaces toward the newly hatched Mothra larva, and Battra also appears as a larva to join the conflict. The double threat immediately escalates the mission.

The battle between Godzilla and Battra moves underwater and triggers a massive crack on the Philippine Sea Plate. The seismic upheaval threatens to swallow the combatants and marks a pivotal moment in the crisis. The tectonic event demonstrates how kaiju battles can reshape the planet.

Ando's true intentions come to light when he takes the Cosmos to Marutomo headquarters. President Takeshi Tomokane intends to use the Cosmos for publicity, exposing the human appetite for spectacle. The moment exposes the commodification of the island's guardians.

Mothra arrives in Tokyo to rescue the Cosmos, but is attacked by the Japan Self-Defense Forces. She escapes and instead begins constructing a cocoon around herself near the National Diet Building. The staging sets up Mothra's imminent transformation.

While Mothra cocoons, Godzilla surfaces from Mount Fuji and Battra frees himself from the Earth's crust, both moving toward Japan. The escalating threat pushes the city toward a large-scale confrontation. Humanity braces for the coming clash.

Mothra and Battra reach their imago forms and converge at Yokohama Cosmo World to confront Godzilla. The three exchange powerful attacks as their full abilities come online. This showdown represents the film's kinetic peak.

Godzilla interrupts the moths' unity and initially attacks Battra. Mothra incapacitates Godzilla briefly and comes to Battra's defense, then the two moths join forces to overpower Godzilla. Their cooperation marks a turning point in the battle.

Godzilla bites Battra's neck, killing him, and Mothra drags the lifeless Battra and Godzilla into the sea. She uses a glyph formed from wing scales to seal Godzilla beneath the ocean's surface. The Earth's balance appears to hinge on Mothra's sacrifice.

The next morning, the Cosmos explain that Battra had waited years to destroy a larger asteroid threat expected in 1999. Mothra had promised to prevent the future collision if Battra died, and the Cosmos depart as the humans bid farewell. The film closes with a cautiously hopeful note about Earth's fragile balance.
