Penang, also called Prince of Wales Island, is a British colony off Malaysia’s west coast. Its capital, George Town, houses about 160,000 residents—mostly Chinese, Malay and South Asian. The island’s economy relies on fishing and port trade, serving as a key link in the British colonial network. Cultural life is dominated by the Chinese, while the mix of ethnicities produces diverse religious practices, including a snake‑worshiping cult, and a rich fusion cuisine.
