Mike Hanson suffers a serious injury and is placed on injured reserve after recently recovering from another setback. He returns to his hometown to recover with his brother Jimmy. The layoff prompts him to rethink his next steps in football.

During a practice session at the field, Kira, a 12-year-old, notices the all-girl flag football team and its players. She experiences exclusion when her male teammates refuse to pass to her, which motivates her to ask her mother Erin for help joining the team. This moment sets the central goal of the film.
