Foreign Correspondent

In mid-August 1939, just before World War II begins, Mr. Powers, the editor of the New York Morning Globe, sends crime reporter John Jones, also known as Huntley Haverstock, to Europe. His mission is to report on the escalating tensions and gather firsthand insights about the looming threat of war.

Upon arriving in Europe, Jones's first assignment is to interview Dutch diplomat Van Meer during a luncheon. Despite Jones's attempts to obtain information regarding the impending conflict, Van Meer skillfully evades direct answers, leaving Jones frustrated yet intrigued.

During the luncheon, Jones meets and is captivated by Carol, Van Meer's daughter. He invites her to join him at his table, but a charming interruption by the host announces that Van Meer cannot speak, leading to Carol addressing the audience instead.

Mr. Powers sends Jones to cover Van Meer's next appearance at a gathering of the Universal Peace Party in Amsterdam. Upon arriving, Jones notices that Van Meer seems disoriented and does not recognize him, raising an alarm about the diplomat's condition.

As the event unfolds, a photographer disguised as a press member shoots Van Meer. Jones instinctively gives chase to the assassin, joined by Carol and her friend Scott ffolliott as they pursue the shooter through the crowded streets.

After losing sight of the suspect, Jones investigates a nearby windmill and discovers a sedated Van Meer. The diplomat manages to whisper crucial information, indicating that the man who was shot was not who he seemed, raising more questions about the conspiracy at play.

Later in his Amsterdam hotel room, Jones is targeted by two spies masquerading as police officers. Sensing the imminent threat, he jumps out of the window, fortuitously running into Carol again, who has her suspicions about his safety.

Amidst a turbulent voyage to England on a British ship, Jones expresses his love for Carol and proposes marriage during a storm. She joyfully accepts, marking a pivotal moment in their developing relationship during uncertain times.

After arriving in England, Jones meets Carol's father and spots Krug, a man linked to the earlier assassination attempt. This encounter heightens the tension as Jones realizes their lives are still at risk.

Realizing his knowledge poses a threat, Fisher conspires to eliminate Jones by offering him a bodyguard, Rowley. However, this bodyguard turns out to be an agent of betrayal, attempting to kill Jones during a visit to Westminster Cathedral.

In a bid to extract information regarding Van Meer's location, Jones and ffolliott devise a scheme to take Carol to Cambridge. However, miscommunication leads Carol to feel betrayed, causing her to leave before the plan can take effect.

Ffolliott tracks Fisher to a hidden hotel where Van Meer is being tortured. In a tense confrontation, he manages to escape just as Jones arrives, and together they rescue Van Meer from his captors.

As tensions reach a boiling point, Britain and France declare war on Germany. This moment of declaration deepens the urgency of Jones's mission to expose the traitors and ensure Van Meer's safety.

During an airplane flight, Jones and Carol find themselves in peril as their aircraft is attacked. The plane crashes into the ocean, leading to a desperate struggle for survival clinging to a floating wing.

After being rescued, Jones returns to England and becomes a prominent war correspondent. In a live radio broadcast, he passionately informs listeners of the bombings in London, motivating Americans to stay vigilant as the war unfolds.
