Flora and Son (2023) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Throughout the film, Flora's journey with music becomes a catalyst for her emotional growth and reconciliation with her loved ones. As she learns to play the guitar and write her own songs, she opens up emotionally and begins to connect with her son, Max. Their relationship, which was strained and distant at the start, starts to heal when Flora shows genuine pride and affection for Max’s musical talents. She encourages him to express himself, and they bond through creating music together, which becomes a symbol of their renewed connection and love.

Meanwhile, Flora develops a romantic connection with Jeff, her guitar teacher, which adds a layer of hope and longing to her story. However, her desire to meet Jeff in person is complicated by practical issues—she can't leave Max alone, and no one is able to help her. This dilemma highlights her sense of responsibility and her feeling of missing out on her own life because of her role as a mother. Nevertheless, her love for Max and her commitment to his future lead her to prevent him from going to juvenile detention, even if it means missing her chance to meet Jeff.
