Five Thousand Dollars on One Ace

Jeff Clayton, a hardened gambler, wins a deed to half a ranch in a high-stakes match that gathers a pot of $5,000. The moment the other man loses, he draws his gun and is shot, sending the dust and tension into the air as Jeff pockets his win and the promise of land.

Soon after, Jeff discovers Juan Carrancho bound to the ground, abandoned by his comrades to die of thirst. Carrancho is freed, and in a swift act of reciprocity saves Jeff from a venomous snake with a precise knife throw. Grateful but wary, Jeff helps him onto a horse, only to watch Carrancho ride off with all of his own money, leaving Jeff with nothing but the deed as his sole stake in the landscape. As the desert opens up before him, Jeff comes across two dead men tied to posts—apparently Carrancho’s former associates—before he seizes a horse and pushes toward civilization, toward a town on the horizon.

In town, Jeff notices the judge and the sheriff departing for business. He also recognizes Rossen, a former outlaw who now bullies a farmer family whose land he has bought, casting a shadow over the region’s fragile peace. With the deed as his last tangible asset and the ranch looming nearby, Jeff rides toward his share, only to be met with cold reception from the other owners: Helen Greenwood and her brother David. Helen meets him at the doorway with a rifle, and she forces him to retreat, making clear that he is not welcome as a partner.

Back in the heart of the town, Jeff offers the deed to Rossen, hoping for a fair price, but Rossen rejects his terms. Jeff then notices Helen in the street speaking with the lawyer, Rechtsanwalt Dundee, a meeting that hints at more manipulation behind the scenes. In the smoky warmth of the saloon, Rossen’s men cheat a poker game with the help of a mirror placed behind their opponent. Jeff steps in, offering the deed as security for the play, and wins with a different hand than what the mirror suggested, shattering the display with a shot and igniting a furious brawl. A fierce fistfight erupts, and when one of the men raises a gun, he is killed by a knife thrown from the shadows—by Carrancho, whose loyalties remain as murky as the desert dust. Jeff knocks the aggressor through a window and demands compensation for his pot, while Carrancho, who has already lost at poker, tries to placate him with talk of a bank heist—an idea Jeff immediately rejects.

Rossen and his men press Helen and David to sell the ranch, but Jeff and Carrancho arrive to stand firm. Jeff rejects Rossen’s offer to buy the deed outright, keeping the land within his grasp. Rossen operates as a front for Dundee, and soon the flames of tension march toward the ranch: Rossen sets the buildings on fire, while Dundee uses the chaos to turn Helen against Jeff, blaming him for the trouble that follows their efforts to hold onto the property. Carrancho infiltrates the bank and witnesses Rossen murder the banker, only to place the blame on David; Jeff jumps in to save David from a lynch mob, and then feigns a shot to “kill” Dundee’s plan and defuse the rising mob.

As the trail leads toward the bank, Jeff spots Carrancho’s knife left behind and discovers the Mexican’s role in a stage hold-up. The robbery robs the travelers, and a mud-slick street fight ensues as Jeff presses forward, ultimately catching Carrancho and extracting the truth about what happened in the bank. Carrancho is reluctant to testify, but Jeff insists that saving David is non-negotiable.

Ambushes set by Dundee’s men unfold in the mountains, and the pair hear the characteristic coyote signals that prick Jeff’s suspicion. Carrancho insists the trouble is from his own men, but Jeff remains cautious, and the two improvise a dangerous escape, cutting down the attackers and seizing their guns. Another pair of ambushers in the pass are struck down by their own comrades, and, with the path cleared, Jeff and Carrancho move onward, making sure Carrancho’s rifle is empty when pointed at Jeff.

They return to the ranch to confront Dundee’s men who were sent to locate David, a chase sparked by Helen’s insistence that her brother is alive. In a climactic town showdown, Jeff kills Rossen in a gunfight, while Carrancho and David shoot two men who had been lying in ambush. Dundee arrives with Helen at gunpoint, ordering everyone to drop their weapons. He tells Carrancho to throw away his knife, and the Mexican flings it into Dundee’s chest before the law has a chance to weigh in.

The judge and the sheriff return to assess the aftermath, and Carrancho helps the weary judge down from his carriage. He bids farewell to Jeff and Helen, presenting Jeff with “his father’s watch” as a token of respect and reconciliation. As Carrancho rides off into the distance, the judge looks to Jeff and asks why he now possesses that watch, leaving the question hanging in the desert air as the story closes.
