Two former Navy sailors (William Haines and Cliff Edwards) leave the service after a decade and try to turn their hobby into a career. Haines invents a high‑performance carburetor, but their first test sinks the admiral’s barge. Broke, they join a boat‑builder determined to create the world’s fastest racing boat, designing a new hull, engine and the experimental carburetor while battling money problems and a looming foreclosure.
