In the halls of Sloppy Secondary High, the everyday bustle of lockers and cafeteria chatter is shadowed by a recent memory that still lingers in whispered rumors. Two years ago a reckless chemistry prank went horribly wrong, leaving the beloved teacher Mr. Balszack barely clinging to life. The school has since tried to heal, and this semester the faculty has organized a 24‑hour charity fast— the first “Famine” event in five years— as a way for the graduating class to turn the tragedy into a moment of solidarity and purpose.

The fast draws a diverse group of thirty seniors, each hoping for extra credit, a chance to bond, or simply the thrill of breaking routine. Among them, Ms. Vickers, the new teacher who spearheads the fundraiser, exudes a mix of earnest optimism and quiet authority, while Jenny— a student with a knack for storytelling— carries the lingering rumors of the past like a secret weight.
