The film recounts Elpidio’s birth, his father's death and the early stirrings of the War of Independence. It follows his encounter with María Silvia and his transformation into a terrifying foe of the Spanish army, the counter‑guerrilla forces and the American landowners, with the story unfolding almost entirely in 1895.
