Carl Frederickson, now living happily with his dog Dug, receives a phone call from Mrs. Myers, the owner of Beta, which makes him nervous. This is his first date since the passing of his beloved wife Ellie, prompting Carl to reflect on his feelings and readiness for new experiences.

In preparation for his date, Carl goes through a series of comedic and awkward attempts to impress, including trying on new cologne and dyeing his hair an unexpected color. As he makes these changes, Dug expresses his discontent, urging Carl to embrace his true self instead.

The movie transitions to Element City, where two fire people, Bernie and Cinder, arrive on a boat and are immediately met with disdain from the other elemental beings. Despite the prejudice against them, they settle in and eventually begin forming their community, Fire Town.

Bernie and Cinder open their shop, The Fireplace, where Ember is born and raised. As she grows up, Ember struggles with her fiery nature, often causing unintentional destruction when her temper flares.

After her father takes a day off for the shop's Red Dot Sale, Ember is left in charge. Overwhelmed by customers and the chaos instigated by their poor habits, she loses control, accidentally causing a pipe to burst and flooding the basement with water.

From the flooded pipes, Wade, a water person and city inspector, emerges, discovering multiple violations that could lead to the closure of The Fireplace. Despite Ember's desperate pleas, Wade has no choice but to report the citations, setting off a chain of events.

In a bid to save her father's shop, Ember partners with Wade to appeal the citations. Their initial attempts at collaboration lead to misunderstandings, revealing both Ember's fiery temper and Wade's emotional sensitivity.

As Ember and Wade work together, their relationship deepens into a secret romance. They bond over shared experiences, leading Ember to confide stories about her family's history and her struggles with identity as a fire element.

Ember and Wade discover that a broken dam is the source of the flooding threatening Fire Town. Together, they devise a plan to stop the overflow by building a makeshift barrier using tempered glass made from Ember's fiery capabilities.
