In 1946, Stalin extends a controversial invitation to all White Russian émigrés who fled to the West after the Bolshevik Revolution, promising them return, safety, and citizenship as a means to rebuild the shattered motherland after World War II. Among the émigrés on the voyage to the USSR is a family led by a doctor, Alexei Golovin, and his French wife, Marie, along with their young son Serjoscha. The mood aboard the ship to Odessa is buoyant, filled with singing and shared hopes, but the moment the ship docks, the grim reality starkly surfaces: Stalin’s promises are a prelude to danger, coercion, and possible death.

On land, the returning émigrés are sorted into two harsh categories by Soviet authorities: those deemed “fit” and those deemed “unfit.” A young man is shot in a forced attempt to flee back to his father, a stark introduction to the peril that waits ashore. The Golovins move into a cramped communal apartment in Kyiv, where life is tightly controlled and observation is constant. Alexei takes a public health post at a factory, his role tying him to the party line, while Marie’s sense of independence and longing to return to France intensifies.

Marie forms a tentative friendship with Matrona, the elderly housekeeper who speaks a little French, but that bond is quickly broken when the woman is denounced and taken away, ultimately dying. The family’s precarious situation grows more complex when Sasha, a talented swimmer and the grandson of the housekeeper, loses his home after his grandmother’s room is claimed by others. Marie invites Sasha to share in the Golovins’ space, and a fragile kinship blossoms between them.

Marie’s sense of entrapment deepens as she clings to memories of France and fantasizes about escape. She makes a bold move to seek help from a visiting French actress, Gabrielle, hoping to facilitate an escape, while Alexei carefully distances himself by performing his duties and publicly praising the Soviet state. Their marriage strains under the weight of competing loyalties and secrets. As Marie presses toward freedom, she befriends Sasha not only as a mentor in swimming but as a potential conduit to the West.

A tangible rift grows between husband and wife when Alexei publicly thanks the Soviet government, which Marie takes as a personal rebuke. The tension intensifies when Alexei confesses that he has slept with a neighboring woman, Olga, a confession that pushes Marie to throw him out. He moves into the adjacent room with Olga, and the family’s home life becomes more fractured.

Sasha earns a place on the national team again, winning the trials for the European championships in Vienna. After his success, he spends the night with Marie, complicating matters further. Marie’s letters to her French family are found in Sasha’s belongings, triggering the coach’s warning to keep apart. Sasha then heads to a Black Sea training camp, and the pressure of divided loyalties tightens.

With Sasha away, Marie’s connection to the West deepens. She journeys with the military choir to a port city, where Sasha arranges for himself to be smuggled aboard a ship leaving the USSR. Marie must secure the funds to aid his escape. The ship captain initially reneges but, after delivery of payment, explains that he cannot approach the shore; Sasha attempts a daring six-hour swim to reach him offshore. Marie is subjected to brutal interrogation by the same KGB official she first met upon arriving, a grim echo of the state’s reach.

A French magazine later reveals that Sasha succeeded in escaping to the West, and Marie is implicated and jailed for six years. Upon her release, her husband and teenage son come to reclaim her, and a fragile reconciliation takes hold. Two years pass, and the family travels to Sofia, Bulgaria, where Alexei discloses that he has arranged Marie’s ongoing escape by writing to the actress Gabrielle. Marie and her son finally escape with Gabrielle to the French embassy, but Alexei is arrested for complicity and sent to a Gulag in Sakhalin.

As the Soviet Union moves toward glasnost, Marie’s fate begins to shift, and in 1987, Alexei finally makes his own return to France. The film lingers on the human cost of political upheaval—the broken marriages, the thirst for freedom, the fear of the unknown, and the slow, uncertain reassembly of a family torn apart by decades of coercive state power. The story is a meditation on loyalty, love, and the desperate pursuit of a life beyond the lines drawn by authoritarian control, told through intimate personal moments set against the broad, oppressive machinery of a nation in flux.
