In 1800s Tasmania, Alexander Pearce, the Pieman, is hunted by a policeman and his tracking dogs. When the officer fires, the gun misfires, giving Pearce a chance to strike and escape. He bites the policeman's neck, killing him, and vanishes into the wilderness. He is later confronted by a Tasmanian tiger and feeds the predator a piece of the dying officer to stay ahead of pursuit.

Pearce continues to elude authorities as he darts through the dense Tasmanian wilderness. He relies on stealth and cunning to remain unseen, knowing that capture means a grim fate. The eerie, predatory encounter with the tiger hints at the island's deadly balance between man and wildlife.

Nina plans a trip to Tasmania to search for the supposedly extinct Tasmanian tiger, driven by a family mystery and a paw print her sister found. Her sister's body is later discovered in the Pieman River, hinting at a dangerous link to the island's legends. The quest blends scientific curiosity with a haunting past.

Matt, Nina's boyfriend, joins the journey along with Jack and Rebecca, whose financial help funds the trip. They travel to the island ready to chase the rumor of a living Tasmanian tiger. The group is fueled by curiosity but unaware of the danger waiting in the wild.

Matt flees underground and uncovers grisly evidence of the cannibal's history. Nina reaches a railway bridge over a fast-flowing river and is cornered by two cannibals, then she throws herself off the high bridge to escape. The ferryman's wife kills one cannibal and then slits her own throat, apologizing to Matt.

That night, police arrive at the hotel, but there is no sign of the missing people. As the officers depart, Matt, exhausted and wary, is suddenly attacked, leaving his fate uncertain. The scene marks the collapse of the group's outward safety and hints at the predators still in the shadows.
