Minna lives with her father John in a rural home where her mother Karen has left to pursue her singing career. The arrival of John's new wife Helene and her daughter Jenny unsettles Minna, who struggles to adjust to this changed family dynamic. The sense of home is overshadowed by tension as Minna tries to find her place among new relatives.

That night, Minna dreams of a hole in the sky and blue creatures called Dreambuilders who control the dream world. She meets Gaff, a Dreambuilder who explains their role in designing people’s dreams. Minna realizes she can influence what happens in dreams.

In a moment of curiosity, Minna sneaks into her father's dream and hands him anchovies instead of cake, unknowingly rewriting the script. Upon waking, John unexpectedly loves anchovies, showing the real-world impact of her dream actions. Minna begins to see that dreams can alter reality.

When Jenny threatens to send Minna's hamster Viggo to an animal shelter, Minna turns to Gaff for help. Gaff reluctantly agrees, and they meddle in Jenny’s dream to insert a giant mechanical Viggo. The alteration demonstrates how fragile dream manipulation can be and raises the stakes.

In the dream world, the consequences of meddling are explained: a dreamer who remains out of their dream stage too long risks ceasing to exist. Minna learns that keeping dreamers anchored to their stages is crucial for everyone’s safety. The lesson adds urgency to her attempts to influence Jenny.

The morning after the dream, Helene considers moving the family back to the city to escape the tensions at home. Minna worries that leaving would sever her connection to the Dreamworld, while Jenny’s recent behavior heightens the pressure of the decision. The potential relocation strains the already fragile family balance.

Minna intensifies her attempts to win Jenny’s friendship by steering Jenny’s dream toward liking Minna’s sweater. She nearly gets caught by the Inspector, but Milo—an ex-Dreambuilder demoted to janitor—helps them escape. The escape underscores the danger of their meddling and the fragile line they walk.

Minna’s attempted manipulation leads to a nightmare for Jenny, exploiting her arachnophobia with a looming mechanical spider. The dream stage collapses, and Jenny plunges into the Dream Trash where used sets are discarded. The Inspector blames Gaff for the fiasco, intensifying the looming real-world consequences.

Back in the real world, Jenny falls into a coma as a result of the dream turmoil. Remorseful, Minna reconciles with John and resolves to save Jenny, recognizing the responsibility that comes with dream manipulation. Helene also faces the impact of the events on the family’s future.

In a dream, Minna meets her mother, who is revealed to be an actor rather than the loving parent she imagined. With help from Gaff, Minna evades the Inspector and enters the Dream Trash to recover Jenny. The journey deepens her understanding of family and the dream world.

Minna and Jenny push through the ruined dream to reach a working dream controller. The Tower leading out of the Dream Trash is destroyed, stranding them in the chaotic world between dreams. They learn from the wreckage and prepare for a dangerous ascent back to a real waking moment.

Chased by the out-of-control mechanical spider, Minna, Jenny, and Gaff use the improvised ladder to reach a dream stage. They manage to deactivate the spider with Gaff’s help, and Jenny begins to fade from the dream if not returned in time. The trio fights to bring Jenny back to her dream stage and wake her up.

Jenny wakes from her coma in the real world, and the family comes together at last. Gaff is reinstated as a Dreambuilder and begins construction on a new dream, signaling hope for a better balance between their lives and the dream world. The family’s bonds are stronger as they move forward.
