Lorenzo sees Capulina standing at the window right after he stabs the woman. Since Capulina was looking through the glass at that exact moment, Lorenzo assumes Capulina witnessed the murder and will report him to the police. This is why Lorenzo immediately searches for his gun to eliminate the witness.

When Lorenzo starts searching for his gun, Viruta quickly operates the scaffolding mechanism. He lowers the platform and pulls Capulina to safety, moving them both out of Lorenzo's reach before he can fire. The two friends then scramble away to a spot where Lorenzo cannot get to them.
