How Don't Turn Out the Lights (2024) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
In the final moments of Don't Turn Out the Lights, it becomes clear that none of the characters survive the night. The group trying to reach the Bluelight music festival encounters a malevolent entity that seems to be an unknown, supernatural evil—possibly demonic or rooted in dark cult practices—that preys on them relentlessly. Despite their efforts to escape, such as sealing the RV and trying to find help, the evil force continuously pulls them back, manipulates their perceptions, and infects their minds. Gaby’s attempt to seek help outside ends tragically with her severed hand, and Chris’s effort to fix the RV results in his death by impalement. Inside the vehicle, Carrie and Sarah become trapped in a nightmare-like loop, with the malevolent presence causing them to mistrust each other. Carrie ultimately tries to escape, only to find Sarah staying behind, where she is later consumed by the darkness. In the end, Carrie manages to make a desperate run across the woods and reaches the road, where she is finally close to rescue. However, in a twist of cruel fate, she too is taken by the entity in broad daylight, vanishing into thin air just before salvation. The previous RV and the abandoned luxury car serve as grim warnings—signs that the evil presence claims everyone who ventures into those woods. The story leaves the origin and nature of the evil ambiguous, emphasizing its relentless and unstoppable nature. Overall, the ending underscores a bleak, hopeless conclusion, with all the characters meeting a tragic fate, and the terror continuing beyond the film's final scene.
