The Duggal family is living a hand-to-mouth existence in Delhi, with Santosh as a teacher coping with a modest salary amidst inflation. His wife Kusum has quit her job, and their children Payal and Sandeep have personal desires for a more comfortable life. They constantly pinch pennies to meet basic needs and cherish small hopes for better days.

Urmi, Santosh's sister from Meerut, invites the family to her wedding and insists they attend in a car to avoid mockery. Faced with financial constraints, the Duggal family plans to rent a taxi and buy a gift, making sacrifices with their limited resources. This sets the stage for their upcoming challenges.

Santosh borrows his neighbor Farooqui's old Maruti Esteem to attend the wedding after initially refusing to rent a taxi. During the event, the car gets stolen but is recovered by inspector Rawat, who realizes Santosh's deception and charges him Rs 5000 to avoid exposing the truth.

Payal accidentally damages the recovered car upon return home, forcing Santosh to pay for repairs. Salma, Farooqui's wife, challenges Santosh to buy a new car within fifteen days, prompting him to accept the challenge despite doubts about his ability to do so.

Santosh visits a dealership and considers purchasing a Maruti Alto, the most affordable option, but faces a five-day deadline to buy it. The family hopes to upgrade from the Alto, especially Payal, who dreams of a modern car like her boyfriend's Hyundai i10.

Sandeep is found to be gambling and is arrested after his contact Kumar is taken into custody. The family discovers his betting ring through a TV news report, leading to anger from Payal and Kusum, while Santosh remains calm and tries to handle the situation responsibly.

With limited options to pay the car's down payment, Santosh considers accepting bribes from students and risking exposure on live TV. He also refuses Payal’s request to join a call center, prioritizing her college education and future stability.

Santosh stumbles upon an answer sheet from his student Aryan, who requests passing marks in exchange for money. Santosh is moved and decides against dishonesty, emphasizing integrity over monetary gain, highlighting his moral conflict.

Payal discovers Aryan painted lewd messages on Santosh's scooter, sparking a fight that causes chaos on the street. This incident draws the attention of Aryan’s relatives and results in a series of comedic and chaotic pursuits through Delhi.

The family's angry encounter ends when Popley, a sweet shop proprietor and Aryan's grandfather, offers to prepay a year’s tuition for their children, allowing the Duggals to find hope and support. The family is pleased and proud of their moral stance and resilience.

The film concludes with the Duggals now owning a Maruti Alto, symbolizing their small but significant achievement. Payal teaches her father to drive, and despite the traffic jams, they feel a sense of pride in their progress, embracing their new life with optimism.
