Karl Tellenbach, known as Dällebach Kari, became a legendary figure in early‑20th‑century Bern. Born with a pronounced hare‑lip that disfigured his face and gave his voice a distinctive nasal tone, he devoted his life to getting people to laugh with him rather than at him. Persistent longing for acceptance and an unrequited love led to deep despair, ending in his suicide at 54. His jokes remain popular today.
